Football Styling

What to wear on game day.

I'm a huge fan of tucking baggy things into tight pants. Not only is it super forgiving to whatever you had for lunch but it also allows you to bundle up and stay warm without looking like a blob.

Gearing up for game day, this may be a good trend to keep in mind. Whether you are lucky enough to have tickets to a playoff game or are cheering on from the best sports bar around, you know your outfit needs to show your team support. You are also probably well aware that the country is vortexing again, and with a wind chill majorly south of zero, you best be dressing appropriately.

When planning your ensembles (makes game day dressing sound much more fabulous), let’s start with the basics. You’re going to need your NFL jersey. For the purpose of this post, we will use the New England Patriots—more specifically, my favorite smiling teddy bear, Vince Wilfork. I may be living in NYC but I won’t stop being a Boston fan until “wicked” is lost from my vocabulary and the vast majority of New Englanders have no reservations swimming in the Charles. So yeah, I’ll be a Boston fan for life.

Fanatics, the leading online retailer specializing in sports apparel, is the perfect shop for your game day needs. Once you have your NFL jersey, I’m sure the rest of your outfit can already be found in your closet.

I paired the baggy Wilfork jersey with a long sleeve shirt underneath (for added warmth) to be tucked into black skinny jeans. These Paige jeans are perfect because they are a cotton/denim blend and add a little stretch when tucking in your bulkier layers. In a dream world, this Acne shearling jacket would provide the perfect amount of style and warmth, but if the $2800 price tag is as unattainable as a Jets winning season, look for something bulky and over sized that you wouldn’t mind leaving unzipped.

I’m normally not a fan of double dorking—or wearing two or more pieces of sporting merchandise—but in these colder temps, throw on your team’s hat too. That way, if you do have to zip up your coat, hiding your shirt, people still know which side of the 50 you’re on.

I’d also accessorize this with hand warmers, chunky socks and a win over Baltimore.

Go Pats! (The New England Patriots face the Baltimore Ravens at Foxborough at 4:35 tomorrow.)
