Practice What You Preach

My previous post is about the power of plaid and I’m here to affirm that I’m a believer, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah (insert The Monkees or Shrek theme song, equivalence wholly dependent upon reader demographic).

People love plaid, they always will, which is exactly why adding even the smallest ounce of it will instantly elevate your outfit.

Though I have yet to fully accept plaid as another new neutral (see my testament to stripes), plaid similarly pairs as impeccably with other patterns as it does with its parallel-lined counterpart.

Why is this you may wonder? Why does it work? My theory is that we have plaid so engraved in our minds as a “thing,” that the busyness of it lends itself as a wonderful palette to accessorize with.

The main remedy when mixing and matching is to think about the colors. Mixing prints with plaid shows that the wearer is conscious of what undertones are best, and showcases that by picking an equally busy print that plays up what color she wants to accentuate.

When building an outfit and starting with plaid, don’t get overwhelmed by believing you’re a lumberjack. Look at the color play and go from there. With my semi-monochromatic outfit, pairing the blues from my shirt, jeans and clutch, I decided to turn to the color wheel and work with complimentary colors when choosing my trusty red polka dot shoes.

Take a look.
