These Boots Were Made for Walking

So hit the pavement and show ‘em off.

Back in 2008, Facebook was flooded with people openly obsessing over stepping on crunchy leaves. Literally, I saw people bragging about finding the most dried out and brittle-y pathetic little effers and pouncing on them.

Now I’m not sure if this is still relevant but being fall and all, if you’re going to be looking down at your feet seeking out dead leaves or even if you’re avoiding dog sh*t and gum, you’re going to want some nice foot swag to set the scene.

A few of you have asked me where to find a great pair of heeled black ankle boots, and the truth is, there are millions out there, you just need to do a little digging first.

I’ve narrowed down your search to a few key pieces with quick tips on what to look for.

1. A heel is essential. Not only do I say this because I like being taller than most people, but because heels are perfect for that work to happy hour transition advice columnists love preaching to you about. At work you’ll look like you’re trying at least four inches more than Plain Jane in the Tory Burch flats, and once 5 o’clock rolls around, a heel instantly transitions you into party-ready mode.

1a. Due to the sheer nature of ankle boots, they will cut you off at a very unflattering part of your leg. That heel will add extra length to help avoid looking stubby.

1b. If you’re new to heels at work or testing the waters with anything above three inches for more than three hours, a stacked heel with ankle support is a great place to start. It'll be much more comfortable and easier to walk in.

2. I’m a recent fan of the peep toe boot but when you’re looking for a staple bootie, start with closed toe. In case you haven’t noticed, it’s freezing out, so if you’re not ready to commit to a built in draft and regular winter-time pedicure, close that toe up.

3. Look for something interesting that will make your boots unique. Guys, everyone has these things; no one is reinventing the wheel here. But if you’re forking over some moo-la for an almost everyday item, grab a pair of boots that will make you stand out: look for hardware, embellishments, texture, cutouts or architecture. Just don’t go crazy (pretty sure only Chanel and Givenchy can get away with that).

3a. If you are making these boots a regular outfit alternate, try to avoid suede if you live in a place that has an average winter warning with anything above 30% precipitation. They will get ruined and you will be pissed.

4. Go black. People aren't lying when they say it goes with everything. Black boots can instantly dress up the season's staple items of a sweater and leggings while also making your A-line skirt and printed tights more work appropriate.

Above shoes: 1. Tibi; 2. Alexander Wang; 3. Reed Krakoff; 4. Alaïa; 5. Zara; 6. Tory Burch; 7. Rachel Zoe; 8. C. Wonder; 9. Steve Madden
